Semiconductor Business Divisions

The Semiconductor Business of Samsung Electronics, based in Giheung, Korea, consists of three major divisions : Memory, System LSI and Storage Systems. It has pioneered numerous advancements in chip technology that are now widely used in mobile, desktop and other digital consumer products.

Through a strategy of aggressive growth, Samsung has held market leadership positions in Memory since 1993, and in NAND Flash since 2003. In 2001, the company signaled a long commitment to logic and analog chip development with the expansion of its System LSI Division and the opening of its SoC Research Lab. In 2004, Samsung's Hard Disk Drive Division was combined with its Semiconductor Business.

Why Samsung Memory?

Samsung is the world's biggest producer and technology driver of DRAM & Memory products, holding No. 1 market share positions for many consecutive years.

Worldwide No.1

Samsung has a number of key competitive advantages over our DRAM competitors:
Market Leadership
First to market with leading-edge DRAM technology
Committed to extending the production lifecycles of legacy DRAM
Greatest elasticity of supply
Broadest array of DRAM products available today
Competitive Advantages
Nand Flash is the new Memory driver for Samsung, using leading edge technology. Samsung has been the #1 NAND Flash supplier for 4 years, with over 60% Market Share. There are many exciting products driving the NAND business, including MP3 Players, USB Flash Drives, Cell Phones, Navigation Systems, and Digital Still Cameras to name a few.

Samsung’s Key Advantages over our competition:
First to market with the highest density of NAND Flash in the world, using the most advanced semiconductor production processes. Currently offering 16Gb TSOP, with 32Gb coming soon.
Market Leadership - #1Supplier of Flash, DRAM, SRAM and MCP, allow for production flexibility
High performance, energy-efficient memory

Dual- and multi-core CPUs for multi-tasking operations, 64-bit operating systems and compute-intensive applications such as virtualisation, 3D, gaming and photo/video editing are accelerating the need for higher-performance memory with reduced power consumption.

From notebooks to servers, as energy efficiency becomes a mandate, Samsung DDR3 provides designers the ideal “green” memory solution to build the latest computing platforms.

From the World Leader in Memory: 2Gb component-based DDR3 memory modules

Samsung 2Gb DDR3 chips are today’s highest-density production memory product and boast special low power technology, operating at 1.5V and 1.35V. Based on 50nm-class processes, the new 2Gb DDR3-based modules save over 40% of the power of 1Gb DDR3 modules. For the new generation of “green” servers, Samsung 2Gb DDR3 reduces electricity bills and cuts the total cost of ownership (TCO) by lowering system power consumption and decreasing the need for cooling, particularly in combination with Samsung SSD's.

Samsung’s 2Gb DDR3 chips are available in registered DIMMs of up to 16GB for servers, 4GB unbuffered DIMMs for workstations and desktops, and 4GB SODIMMs for laptops. Particularly for Nehalem / Tylersburg-based systems, our 8GB and 16GB server modules allow for large memory capacity while preserving the maximum bus speed of 1333Mbps.

It's the ideal memory for the data center, which has a well-documented need for more performance with less energy consumption. Server electricity expenditures are increasing annually, with an average data center consuming the equivalent energy of 25,000 households.

Samsung DDR3 delivers huge energy savings for today's green computing platforms

DDR3 offers significant power savings compared to DDR2, cutting energy requirements by more than 60% in the case of the latest 50nm-class 2Gb DDR3 while delivering twice the performance.

For servers, desktops or notebooks, Samsung DDR3 delivers the unbeatable combination of maximum bandwidth and density at the lowest power consumption. In addition, all products come in lead-free, halogen-free packaging, thus contributing to a greener environment.

Samsung DDR3 - Massive Bandwidth and Ultra-Low Power Consumption

The evolution of DDR3 has resulted in a high-performance chip that contributes significantly to key markets like the graphics industry, where fast data transfers between frame buffers are required.

With a latency of approximately 13 nanoseconds, DDR3 is also an ideal memory solution for network applications where frequent random accesses occur.
